All Minus One

All Minus One is an underground private members club that brings together free thinkers and speakers with an interest in culture.

What is with the name?

The name All Minus One was inspired by a J.S Mill quote.

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind…” - John Stuart Mill, On Liberty

What is All Minus One?

All Minus One is a community for free thinkers (and speakers) with an interest in the culture.

When we say culture, we mean it in the broadest possible way. It is the songs, stories, and ideas that pervade us from the moment we are born. It is what is created when a group of people comes together.

What All Minus One is not is a space to focus on politics or policy - of course, it is unavoidable today, but to the extent we discuss politics it will only ever be because it is incidental to the wider topic. There are plenty of spaces out there that insist on politicising everything and will tell you that the personal is political, and thus our thoughts and words should be policed.

We disagree.

Of course, the very notion that it is possible to carve a space outside of politics and government will be considered by some to be political statement itself - and perhaps it is - but if is a political statement then it is one that says that we ought not be divided by politics but united by values.

To that end All Minus One is a broad church that welcomes everyone, from renegades to retrogrades.

Freedom, Charity and Culture

Freedom Not Censorship

Encourage people to express themselves freely, even if you disagree with what they have to say.

Charity Not Pettiness

Give people the charity of interpretation, rather than assuming the worst possible motivations.

Create Culture Not Politics

Focus on creating things that will stand the test of time, and what will be important, inspiring, and beautiful far into the future, not the temporary and short-term spats of the present.

Not-For-Profit and Not for Payment

What does the Membership go towards?

By charging for membership we can, eventually, bring you - our members - bigger guests, better spaces, and move beyond being a community solely for our members and expand into platforming talented members of our community and other events that give the public some exposure to our values.

In short, the membership fee is an investment in helping All Minus One to grow.

No one at All Minus One gets paid for what they do, we run off pure idealism and spark. We are also a not-for-profit, so all money goes towards the mission of creating a culture of freedom.
